The first homebrew: Thwaite and Concentration Room

Two homebrew games by Damian Yerrick run on the NES: Thwaite, a missile-defence game, and Concentration Room, a card-matching game. Both are free software, built from their source code, and their frames match MesenCE’s on the Tang Nano 20K and the PYNQ-Z2.

Until the controllers are built, both wait at their first screen, which is quiet by design; their music starts once a game begins. Controllers come next, with a player that feeds the console a scripted run of button presses, the same in the simulation and on every board.

Concentration Room's title screen: the words Concentration and ROOM in large black letters on white, the subtitle Accident at Hombon Lab, and a menu of four game modes.
Concentration Room, a homebrew card-matching game, at its title screen: the frame drawn by retro-silicon's NES on the Tang Nano 20K, read back through its test shell, and identical to MesenCE's pixel for pixel.
